Anya Schmemann

Director Independent Task Force Program, Washington Director, Global Communications and Outreach

Anya Schmemann is Washington Director of Global Communications and Outreach and Director of the Independent Task Force Program at the Council on Foreign Relations. She recently returned to CFR after serving as Assistant Dean of Communications and Outreach at American University’s School of International Service.

Previously at CFR, Schmemann oversaw eleven high-level Task Forces, on topics including nuclear weapons, climate change, immigration, trade policy, and internet governance—and on U.S. relations with Turkey, Brazil, the Koreas, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Schmemann formerly managed communications at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard’s Kennedy School and administered the Caspian Studies Program there. She coordinated a research project on Russian security issues at the EastWest Institute in New York and was assistant director of CFR’s Center for Preventive Action in New York, focusing on the Balkans and Central Asia.

Schmemann received a BA in Government and an MA in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies, both from Harvard University. She has written on U.S. policy toward Russia in U.S. News & World Report, the Atlantic, the National InterestHuffington PostCNN GPS, and elsewhere. She was a Truman National Security Fellow, a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Center for the National Interest, and is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
